I have wanted to do something like this with the Arcane Brotherhood set since I first saw it, It is not totally to My liking but perhaps I have been looking at it too long. Maybe it will appeal to someone...
The composition is fine, I think. The proportions do seem a bit off, the props look a wee bit too large for the guy - but that might just be your point, so I'll shut up.
I would work on two things here. The sky visible through the roof - I would make it pitch black with some small, bright stars to make the scene a bit more dramatic and increase contrasts. The other problem are the textures on the walls... You might want to try make the image darker to hide them. Remove most of the lights, add raytraced shadows. The magic effects, candle and the shiny sphere in the front would work nice as the only light sources.
Ugh, sorry for that longish post, hope you don't mind.
Thank you so much for this post Tash, it hits much of My own dismay with this pic right on the head. I will revisit it soon I expect and encorporate that which you have brought up and see if it helps Me to like it more. Anytime you wanna step in you know you are welcome. Long posts if having genuine helpfullness in them are always appreciated. And you know what your doing so glad you are around.

We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
